Several studies have proven that clutter can be a significant cause of stress and anxiety. A cluttered space can also have a negative effect on your creativity and your ability to fully focus. Clutter invades the open space that you require to brainstorm and solve problems. Thereby making it difficult for you to achieve maximum level of productivity and relaxation. This post details the importance of decluttering your space.

Physical clutter means having a lot of possession in your living space that you do not need or use. Also it can simply mean your living space is untidy and disorganised.

A few studies have scientifically proven the importance of decluttering your space. For example this  scientific behavioural experiment found that people are more likely to make vulnerable food choices when they are in a chaotic environment.

This other  research also found out that physical clutter within our living space can significantly influence our brain’s cognition and emotional behaviour.

This research also proves that when we are in cluttered space our visual cognition is constantly sending reminders of disorganisation to the brain that drains our cognitive resources. And eventually makes us feel physically and mental exhausted. Clutter can play a significant role in your mood and how you feel about your living space. Similarly, it can also make you physically unable to relax and distract you from what you should really be focusing on.

There is enough proof to say if you would like to create a relaxing environment in your space, then start by decluttering. It might make the immediate need to create, relax and let go seem impossible. But a  declutter and tidy place will definitely improve your focus and eventually improve your quality of life.

So the first step to having a relaxing and peaceful space would be decluttering and tidying your physical space. You will not only feel free in your mind but your mood will improve for the better.  If you are wondering how to make decluttering a daily process then check out valuable content provided by Marie Kondo. It’s important to remember that clutter in our lives sometimes doesn’t apply to physical space. Our minds can be just as cluttered as our physical space. Important thing is to recognizing mental clutter and find ways to improve your wellbeing. For example, having too much on your to-do list can be an easy cause of mental clutter. Scheduling and prioritising important and urgent tasks first is something to consider if you want to minimise mental clutter. If you think you need professional help to deal with mental clutter, then by all means seek the help of a professional.

Organised and tidy spaces make most people feel more focused, less stressed and less anxious. However, some people tend to thrive in a messy environment. This study found out that for some, a messy desk is a source of inspiration. So, as alway stick to what works for you.

I love how relaxing and peaceful the spaces above look. I love crisp white in the home and the light post of color here and there plus the minimalism in keeping the space decluttered is fabulous! I love this and we are getting ready to buy home and I am for sure going for the clean and decluttered look.

I find clutter really stressful. We always make an effort to declutter but it is a constant work in progress. It makes so much difference having a clutter free space if possible.

Whenever I feel congested mentally, it means it’s time to declutter, and then after I clean, and reorganise my environment I feel so much lighter and at ease. Sometimes though I admit that for some work assignments clutter helps as it gets me into a chaotic mindset, but generally I like that feeling of light and clean! Awesome post on this.

I always feel better about myself when I organize and clear out things I no longer need/use. People underestimate how much cleaning can actually help our mental health.
